EMD introduced the “Dash 2” line in 1972 which included the GP40-2. Externally, the GP40-2 differed slightly from the previously released GP40. Dash 2 spotting features included the roof overhang on the rear of the cab, water-level sight glass on the long hood, revised battery box door design, horizontal stiffening ribs on the blower housing and Blomberg-M trucks. To save replacement costs, several railroads opted to reuse older Blomberg-B sideframes from their trade-in units. Internally, the GP40-2 was a whole new locomotive. Two major improvements were the solid state electrical components and vastly improved adhesion and wheel-slip control.

Sales of the GP40-2 were modest with 1139 units sold. Factory options included non-dynamic or dynamic brakes, steam generator for passenger service, variety of fuel tank sizes, and much more. As with most diesels built over a long period of time, several external variations occurred including converting from “chicken wire” to corrugated radiator grilles, lengthening the nose from 81” to 88”, replacing the radiator fans with quieter “Q-fans”, changing to straight side sills and switching to the free-flow “angled” blower housing. GP40-2 locomotive production ended in 1986.
