This release of ATSF SD39s depicts these engines as they looked after being repainted into the yellow warbonnet scheme in the late 1970s. Additional equipment added at this time included a rooftop beacon, which is illuminated on our model.

Guilford received these locomotives from the N&W, who in turn had received them from the Illinois Terminal. They retain many of their ITC features such as a small fuel tank, no dynamic brakes, and a gong bell mounted on the walkway in front of the engineer.

The 1997 film Switchback features a Rio Grande train pulled by two ex-SP SD39s that were leased and painted specifically for the role. After the filming was completed, the engines were returned to their owner, Andesite Rock Company, where they continued to work in faded Rio Grande paint for several years, as depicted by our model.

Unique among SD39s, several of Southern Pacific’s units were equipped with FARR style radiator grills. The SP SD39s in this release feature this distinct detail, as well as the block “SP” letters on the nose that were added sometime after delivery. Additionally, these engines feature the later style of ballast block that was installed on either side of the nose of the units

From the 1982 acquisition of the Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern by Soo Line until they were repainted, the two MNS SD39s had several details changed. An additional air whistle was added to the cab, and plows were added to the units. They also received Soo Line style numberboards. This release of MNS SD39s depicts the units in their later appearance.

Progesssive rail now operates over sections of the former MNS line. Their roster includes an ex-MNS SD39 that has been repainted into their version of the MNS blue scheme. The engine features special placards identifying the engine as part of Canadian Pacific’s shortline system.
